Important Facts for Incoming Applicants

  • Deadlines
    • November 28 for International Fellowship Students
    • January 1 for Domestic Fellowships
    • January 15 for all other applications (Note:  please contact Program Administrator for late applications; biophysics@osu.edu).

  • Applications: Online applications is available at http://www.gradapply.osu.edu.  There is an application fee of $50.00 for international and $40.00 for domestic students. The Office of Graduate Admissions provides a step-by-step guide to admissions and answers to frequently asked questions.
    • We encourage both domestic and non-domestic applications.  Special consideration and opportunities are available for domestic minority applicants.
    • If you are a domestic student with a GPA of at least 3.0 you may be eligible for the CIC FreeApp program that would cover your application fee.
  • Curriculum Vitae/Resume: Attach your CV/resume to your online application. You do not need to send a hard copy, if you attach online.
  • Statement of Purpose: Attach your statement of purpose to your online application. You do not need to send a hard copy, if you attach online.
  • Official Transcripts: One original transcript from each accredited institution of higher education attended. Applicants now have the option to upload transcripts when they submit their application, or they can email transcripts to gradadmissions@osu.edu if they have already applied. The images need to be of actual transcripts, not advising reports or web printouts. Hard copies of transcripts may be sent to:

  • Official (tape reported) GRE scores: Please contact Education Testing Services (ETS) to request official (tape reported) tests scores. The institution code for the Ohio State University is 1592. The program code for the Biophysics Graduate Program is 0076.
  • Official (tape reported) TOEFL scores (International students only): Please contact Education Testing Services (ETS) to request official (tape reported) scores.
  • Reference letters: Three reference letters should be submitted online. Letters of individuals that can evaluate you in a research setting are the most meaningful.

  • Students are admitted in three categories
    • University Fellowship.  Students must have GPA > 3.6 and GREs > 75 percentile and TOEFL > 100.   Highly qualified students can get exemptions for one or more of these criteria.  Stipend level currently  $23,600/year + tuition and fees.   Special fellowship criteria are available for domestic minority applicants.
    • Graduate Teaching or Research Assistants.  Domestic students must have > 3.0 GPA, and >50% average GRE scores. Non-domestic students >3.3, >75% average GRE scores, TOEFL > 100. Non-domestic students with Masters Degrees or significant publication history are preferred. Highly qualified students can get exemptions. (Contact Program Administrator at biophysics@osu.edu).  Stipend currently $23,600/yr + tuition & fees.
    • Masters Students.  Students wishing to only complete a Masters Degree are NOT eligible for fellowship or GTA stipend and tuition and fee waivers.

  • Total number of Students admitted per year ranges from 6 to 12
  • Insurance Benefits.  All students receiving financial aid receive 75% paid health insurance and 50% for domestic partners.
  • Directions for you personal statement
    • Reasons for your interests in Biophysics
    • Reasons for your interest in attending Ohio State vs. other programs.  It may be useful for you to make contact with specific faculty in areas of interest.
    • Your long term goals as a scientist
    • Unique aspects of your qualifications, personal interests, research experience and your inspirations.
    • Any information about your college or University and the faculty writing your recommendations that will help reviewers understand the national or international ranking of your institution and the background of your reviewers.
    • Include a abbreviated curriculum vitae or resume that includes your academic credentials, your work experience, your publications, your average undergraduate and graduate GPA, GRE scores, TOEFL, etc.
    • Three recommendation letters are required and must be submitted online or on letterhead stationary  with original signature and email and phone contact information.  Authors of recommendation letters will be contacted directly for verification.  It is wise to choose faculty, advisors or mentors who are very familiar with your academic credentials and your potential as a future scientist, e.g., former research advisors.
